Our Story

Turkeyfoot Creek Elderberry Farm is located in Henry County, Northwest Ohio. It’s named for the creek on its western property line that feeds into the Maumee River, from the south and north, forming… a Turkeyfoot!

In 2018 I was newly retired from teaching H.S. Spanish and with three weeks’ rest, the gears began to turn once again! During my teaching years in and around Columbus, Ohio, a friend labeled me a “frustrated farmer” after seeing I’d cultivated my entire urban front and back yards in Columbus, Ohio with berry plants, fruit trees, rhubarb, veggies, and flowers. I would explain to neighbors walking by that it was my “therapy” after a long day at work. It’s one of those things I do for free that gives me joy!

So, naturally, I looked to my piece of the family farm, originally Grandma’s Jersey dairy. It took the fingers on only one hand to figure out I was the third generation woman-owner/operator here!

That’s right, I am happy to “commute” 140 minutes to the farm about once a week, April through October. Really, it’s a luxury that forces me to sit down and enjoy listening to podcasts where I get to learn about all sorts of fascinating topics, from regenerating soil biology to polyphenols and sales and marketing. And, yes, I’m aware how “geeky” that sounds, and it’s OK ; )

I’m rarely without my best friend(s), Shadow and sometimes Charli. They both do a magnificent job keeping me safe and the ground moles in-check! Jim, my partner-in-crime, rounds out the rest of my support team, joining me on many trips as my right-hand man, general engineer, and logistics manager.

Janice sits with a sun hat amongst her elderberries. She is serene and holding a traveling mug.
